Sony May Cutback Half of Its Smartphone Division by 2020

Sony is reportedly on the point of pull up a few of its stakes within the smartphone business. In accordance with Nikkei Asian Review, the major tech manufacturer is planning to chop up to half of its smartphone workforce by 2020. The potential layoffs could leave as many as 2,000 individuals with no job, although the corporate is predicted to switch a few of these employees to different divisions. Engadget reached out to Sony concerning the layoffs and can replace this story if we hear again.

The reported cutbacks at Sony maybe should not come as a shock. The Japenese tech giant has never been able to get a correct foothold inside the industry. The company’s smartphones have fallen almost totally out of favor. While practically 1.6 billion smartphones shipped during 2018, just 10 million of them have been Sony devices, in accordance with Statista. Despite the struggling gross sales, Sony introduced a brand new flagship phone, the Xperia 1, at Mobile World Congress last month.

The rumored layoffs will not be the first time Sony has downsized its smartphone division. The company laid off 2,000 workers in 2009 after closing down 4 services where it produced smartphones. It slashed 1,000 extra jobs from the department in 2015 in response to underwhelming earnings. With the most recent cuts, it is fair to wonder just how many extra contractions Sony’s smartphone group can endure earlier than it shuts its doors for good.
